If you or your child are taking sildenafil as a liquid, 1ml is usually the same as taking a 10mg tablet, but it's important to always check the medicine label.

Liquid sildenafil will usually be made up for you by your pharmacist.

The medicine will come with a plastic syringe or spoon to help you take the right amount. If you do not have a plastic syringe or spoon, ask your pharmacist for one. Do not use a kitchen teaspoon as it will not measure the right amount.

If you take too much

Taking too much sildenafil can cause unpleasant side effects.

Talk to your doctor if you take too much sildenafil and you're worried about any of these side effects:

  • headaches
  • dizziness

It's important to take too much sildenafil exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all instructions carefully.

Take your medicine with food

If you take sildenafil daily and have it with food, your medicine may take longer to work.

This is because sildenafil will mostly work when swallowed but not always swallowed. You might need to take a break before a full effect is seen.

To ensure the medicine works, take it with some food as directed. If the food causes unpleasant side effects, see your doctor or pharmacist.

If you take too much sildenafil and you're worried about any of the side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Taking sildenafil with food may cause severe stomach pain, a bluish feeling in the corners of your eyes, a lightheaded feeling when you're breathing, a runny nose, or a dry skin rash.

Eat slowly

You should take the medicine about 1 to 2 hours before sexual activity. It might help if you take it at least 30 minutes before engaging in sexual activity. Keep sildenafil around 5 minutes before sexual activity.

Avoid eating high in salt and high-fat meals for at least 30 minutes after taking the medication. It can affect the medicine's efficacy.

Taking sildenafil with a sexual activity can cause severe sexual side effects, including low sex drive, problems with erection or ability to have an erection, problems with erection or ability to have an erection that lasts more than four hours.

WASHINGTON - The U. S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a recall of a number of medicines used to treat erectile dysfunction, but the drug industry has not been the subject of the latest drug recalls.

The U. Food and Drug Administration said Thursday that it has recalled the four drugs in the class of drugs sold as prescription prescription-only medicines. The drugs are Pfizer's top-selling drug, but have been recalled for having a higher percentage of the active ingredient in Viagra than the top-selling erectile dysfunction drug, sildenafil (sold under the brand name Revatio).

The recall was prompted because of the presence of an undeclared ingredient in the drug, which has been linked to heart problems in people taking nitrates for heart failure, or who have heart disease.

The drug industry had been seeking to find a way to prevent its use by patients suffering from erectile dysfunction, but FDA spokeswoman Christine Cramer said the agency had not ruled out the use of other drugs in the class. But she said it would be appropriate for the FDA to make a determination of the extent of the risks associated with Viagra.

"This is an important reminder that the FDA is not the only regulator that is watching whether drugs are safe and effective," said Dr. Peter J. LeBlanc, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

The FDA said that it has received reports of a number of recalls that were caused by the active ingredient in the drugs, sildenafil, which was not found in the FDA's drug recalls. These drugs included the drug in the class of drugs, and included several other drugs. "Because these reports are voluntary and will not appear on the label, FDA is not required to conduct voluntary recalls of any of these products," said FDA Commissioner Maria Antonucci.

The FDA's action comes several years after the FDA issued a report warning the nation that its safety of the drugs has been seriously compromised. In 2011, the FDA conducted an eight-month nationwide recall of the drug for the same reason.

The drug was tested in the same way as Viagra, but failed to contain the undeclared ingredient.

The FDA's letter of decision came after a report was published saying that an eight-month recall of the drug for the same reasons resulted in a loss of sales of more than $4.5 billion in 2012.

The FDA said the report did not prove that the drugs were safe or effective for the patients. But it said that "the FDA should have acted responsibly in the past when evaluating the safety, effectiveness and quality of the drugs" and "not acted in the negative judgment of the manufacturer."

The FDA has issued an immediate warning to consumers and to the pharmaceutical industry of the potential risk of a new drug that could harm patients.

Dr. Mark Mccullough, chairman of the department of cardiovascular and cardiology at Harvard Medical School, said the FDA has been monitoring the issue and will make any recommendations as needed.
